The Long Version:
Your Belt will be made by hand to measure from top quality 3.5-4 mm thick, Hand Dyed Veg-tan Double Butt Leather.
Which is great but what does that mean, and why is it good?
We hand dye & finish your belt so that the design really stands out.
Veg-tan is a type of leather made by using a natural traditional tanning process that uses a natural tanning liqueur rather than a chromium based one.
A double butt is the name of the cut of the hide is over the rear of the cow and it is the best cut for strap work.
To start with I will select a hide and cut your belt strap using a hand tool set to 1.5″ wide, I will then soak the strap in water so it will accept the embossed pattern just right, once the pattern has be added using a hand-cranked embossing wheel I will then leave it to dry over night.
Next I will cut the holes for the buckle, rivets and pin to pass though, I will then add the size holes to match your order requirements, we add one hole on your requested size and 4 either side for years of adjustment. Now that’s the base work done and for some belts that’s enough…..But not ours.
Next I will use an Edge Bevelling hand tool which removes the square corners from the strap, this process makes the strap more comfortable to wear and looks great too, I will then use my block of Bee’s wax to run down the sides of the belt strap and run my beech burnishing tool along the edged which smooths and seals the edge of the belt. and leaves it with a slight gloss finish.
To finish the belt I will add our makers mark, fit the Solid cast Brass buckle and close the belt with 2 solid copper Saddlers Rivets and the a generous coat of MOM’s home made Leather Grease and we are done 🙂
An IMPORTANT note on fitting, Please ensure you measure your self accurately and select the appropriate size, The label in your jeans can be wrong or the jeans may have stretched please don’t rely on them. If you order the wrong size then I am afraid that you have ordered the wrong size so please please please make sure you measure twice so I can cut once 🙂
