Jorvik Turn shoes. Based on the finds from Coppergate in York. These shoes have a 4-6 mm veg-tan leather sole with triangular heal riser and (inside foot) leather 2 toggle closure.

Description

Two Toggle Turn Shoe, Coppergate & Hungate 9th – 11th C.

Provenance:  Leather and Leatherworking in Anglo-Scandinavian and Medieval York – Q.Mould, I.Carlisle & E.Cameron, page 3307, find reference 15436 &, Type 4 subcategory a3.

Whilst these are based on the Jorvik/York shoe similar examples are found throughout the 9th – 11th Century world. Other examples ( some fragmentary) have been found in the following locations:

France, Paris, Saint-Denis, 9th C (Montembault 1998)

Oxford mid 9th C (Thornton 1977,156,160. fig.35, 10-11)

Norwich late 10th-11th C. (Ayers & Murphy 1983, 25. fig 23, 7)

London, Poultry & Bull Wharf, 11th C. (Jackie Keily,pers. comm)

The uppers are made from 2-2.5mm Veg tan cow hide joined by hand sewn edge butted seams.

The soles are 3-4 mm veg-tan cow hide, they soles are hand sewn using the original type 1 method (grain/flesh & tunnel Stitch) and and have a triangular heal raiser (type a) .

The shoes closed by two leather Toggle and adjustable leather receivers.

Suitable for portrayal of a 9th – 11th C ‘European’ persona.

These shoes are accepted for use within:

The Vikings (NFPS)

Regia Anglorum.
